Introduction
In this blog post I will discuss a short story called “The Lottery “ Written by American writer Shirley Jackson. The story is about a fictional village and its famous tradition that affected the families that live there. The village comes together for its annual lottery. This lottery results in the murder of a member of the town chosen by random. After the choosing the member is stoned to death. Also I will answer these questions. Are there any American traditions that share similarities with the lottery tradition in the village? When have you made an important choice to break away or not break away from a strong cultural tradition you shared with a family, friend, or culture? Are there any American traditions that share similarities with the lottery tradition in the village? An American tradition that is violent and shares similarities with “The Lottery” is the KKK burning of a cross. This was the Klan’s way of intimidation. This tradition makes members dress up in white robes , target a person of interest , and set fire to a cross on someone’s lawn. Members all share this hate for individuals so they blindly follow the tradition not ever thinking to themselves. Would I want someone doing this to me? The cross represents “ The Black Box” . The burning of the cross would represent the stoning of Tessie. Also the fact that Klan members would dress up and do this act of violence. Then return back to being everyday citizens relates to the story that no one contemplates on why they are doing this. When have you made an important choice to break away or not break away from a strong cultural tradition you shared with a family, friend, or culture? When I have made an important choice to break away from a tradition was the beginning of my Freshmen year of highschool. I had chosen to stop attending church. My family always thought it was best to go to hear the word of god. I never really got into it though . I think I never really understood the concept of church which made it boring to me. Not attending did not have the effect I thought it would have. They all just left it alone and told me teenagers just do not enjoy church.

I agree with you that the KKK burning's are similar to the lottery, both are acts of violence and both are scary events in my opinion. Also, I think that choosing not to attend church anymore is a big choice to make. I applaud you for standing up for what you believe in, or not believe in.

I never would have thought of relating the KKK and the lottery. It was a well thought out representation though. Good job!

Walt, I can see where your coming from with not attending church. My family was like that as well, especially my grandmother, she didn't take the fact that I stopped going very well.
